Berlin, 2 Sep 2024. In light of the current projections for the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony, the Amadeu Antonio Foundation calls for increased efforts to counter the normalization of right-wing extremism. The results of the two state elections clearly show that far-right parties have gained significant political influence in East Germany. The Foundation emphasizes the urgency of strengthening structures of civil society and defending democratic values.
‘We cannot allow far-right parties like the AfD in Thuringia and Saxony to continue gaining influence. Their projected election results are alarming and threaten democracy in Germany,’ explains Timo Reinfrank, Executive Director of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation. ‘It is essential that we continue to strengthen civil society in East Germany and expand democratic participation, particularly in rural areas.’
The far-right AfD must not have any influence on government formation in Thuringia and Saxony.
‘Any speculation about cooperation with the AfD contributes to the further normalization of right-wing extremism. So far, the “firewall” has played a significant role in curbing the development of organized right-wing extremism. Both states need democratic majority governments that firmly and decisively oppose the far-right AfD. Moreover, the federal government must take a strong stance against antisemitic conspiracy ideologies that have been expressed by some members in the context of pandemic aftermath discussions,’ adds Reinfrank.
Reinfrank highlights the importance of existing democracy programs: ‘Programs like “Orte der Demokratie” in Saxony and “DenkBunt” in Thuringia are central pillars in the fight against right-wing extremism. These programs must urgently be expanded and adapted to the current challenges. We also urgently need democracy support laws in both states to ensure sustainable civil society engagement.’
Particularly concerning is the high level of support for the AfD among young people. ‘An alarming number of young people voted for the AfD in these elections. This shows that we must do much more in school and youth social work, as well as in prevention, to protect young people from right-wing extremist influences,’ Reinfrank continues. ‘It is our responsibility to offer these young people alternatives and not let right-wing extremists intimidate us.’
In 2024, the Amadeu Antonio Foundation supported a total of 104 projects with its Gegenwind campaign, which actively work against the normalization of right-wing extremism in East Germany. ‘These projects are a vital contribution to countering the influence of far-right parties,’ emphasizes Reinfrank. ‘Thanks to donations from many committed individuals and other contributions, we were able to support numerous local initiatives that courageously stand up for democracy and human rights.’
Reinfrank also calls for stronger involvement from the federal government: ‘It is essential that the federal government continues to support and safeguard civil society engagement in East Germany. Programs like Demokratie leben! must not be influenced by anti-democratic forces in municipalities after the local elections. We must ensure that civil society projects and advisory centers are directly supported to safeguard the defense of democracy.’
The Amadeu Antonio Foundation urges a continued determined approach to confronting right-wing extremism and standing together in solidarity. ‘Now is not the time for resignation. Especially in these difficult times, we must stand together as a society and strengthen democratic cohesion,’ Reinfrank concludes.”
