Berlin, 22 Feb 2024. With at least €150,000, the Amadeu Antonio Foundation is supporting initiatives that advocate for democracy and solidarity in East Germany and against the growing influence of far-right forces. The focus of the campaign is in Thuringia, but projects from Saxony and Brandenburg are also invited to apply.

‘People across Germany are currently taking to the streets against right-wing extremism. Protests are also happening in small towns in East Germany, and that is encouraging,’ says Timo Reinfrank, Executive Director of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation. ‘Our funding campaign aims to build on these protests. What we need now are projects that offer local engagement, convey the values of the Constitution, and practice solidarity by protecting and supporting those who are marginalized or disadvantaged. We need initiatives that counter hate and agitation with education and a culture of democratic debate.’

Projects can apply for up to €5,000 in funding if they launch locally effective, cross-party and inclusive campaigns for active voter participation and highlight the concrete effects of the influence of far-right movements and networks at the local level. Practical actions supporting democratic civil society, marginalized people, and local politics in communities dominated by far-right extremism can also be funded. Projects that contribute to the protection of those affected by right-wing, racist, and antisemitic violence and involve key actors in their region, such as local businesses, are also encouraged to apply for funding.

The funding campaign is made possible through the civic movement Campact, its supporters, and the donors of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation.

Applications can be submitted throughout 2024, until the funds are exhausted.
