For homosexuals and transsexuals, acts of public affection can be dangerous, even in Berlin. Same-sex couples or people whose gender identity eludes binary unambiguity are often spontaneously insulted and physically attacked. For many people, touching or kissing one another on the street is associated with a fear of being assaulted.

Homophobic and trans-hostile attacks account for a large portion of the violence perpetrated in Berlin, which is motivated by inhumane ideologies. The Maneo gay anti-violence project recorded 324 cases in 2017, more than in previous years.
